On March 18, 2026, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced a major investment in the work being done at the MIT Center for Gynepathology Research (CGR). Director Linda Griffith and her team have been awarded a $3-million-per-year NIH grant to establish a new Technology Development Center at MIT.
This center will lead the way in developing “organs-on-chips” and other New Approach Methodologies (NAMs). These platforms allow researchers to model human biology—specifically for female-skewed diseases like endometriosis—in ways that traditional animal models simply cannot.
As Professor Griffith noted, the goal is to shift the clinical conversation “from one of women’s pain to one of biomarkers, genetics, and molecular networks.” This grant is more than just funding; it is a recognition of the urgent need for engineering-driven solutions in women’s health.
